Stereotypes of Student Living

Hello everyone!  Last week, we introduced you to our project and earlier this week we introduced you to our team.  Now, we would like to invite you to share your thoughts and experiences.  This week’s topic: stereotypes of student living!  What kinds of stereotypes come to mind when you think about student homes?  We’ll give you a few ideas to get the ball rolling – one negative stereotype that people have is that student homes are dirty and noisy; a positive one is that student homes are places where lasting friendships are created.  What do you think? Can you think of any other stereotypes?  Do you think they are real?  Join the discussion by leaving your comments here on blog or to our e-mail: whostolemymilk@gmail.com.  If an interesting topic arises we might even dedicate an entire post to it in the near future!

  1. We steal each others' food. I am speaking from experience...as the perpetrator....!!

  2. From my personal experience: student homes ARE noisy and dirty! Living with strangers can be hell!

  3. In college housing, I had a turtle habitat drain into my room from the floor above, soaking my bed; permanent standing water in the tub thanks to a housemate's hair clogs; and a housemate who could go two weeks without washing a dish.

  4. Depending on if you get to choose your room/house mates, and despite any petty food stealing there is also a great opportunity for caring and generosity. They are your school family who hopefully will make sure you're alright and help if you're not. The Rutgers case in the news with the webcam shows the possible sinister side, but that is perhaps a stereotype of randomly chosen roommates.

  5. I think crazy student house parties are just a myth. I lived in various student homes and we've never had a party at our place.
